Top Five Favorite Weather Apps

At AY, we're constantly checking the weather, whether we're prepping our weekend sailing class lesson plan or just deciding whether to eat out on the patio at our favorite Mexican place. With improved prediction algorithms and radar resolution, weather prediction has never been more accurate. Still, it's impossible to say exactly when you'll get wet until you actually feel those first drops, so we check several apps to make the best guess we can. So the next time you see dark clouds over the western horizon, you can be sure all of us in the office and on the water are constantly switching between these apps.

RadarCast ($2.99 iOS/Android)

This app does one thing very well. It combines up-to-the-minute ground radar and satellite data to give you a continous loop of past present and projected future preciptiation. It also shows the precise locations of lighting strikes, so you know when it's time to head for shore.

Dark Sky ($3.99 iOS/Free for Android)

Only care if it's going to rain exactly where you're standing? Dark Sky is exceptional at predicting that. The app's main page shows you the temperature and a timeline of when it's supposed to rain at your precise location. It's also really pretty, so you don't have to choose between avoiding ugly design or staying dry.

SailFlow (Free for iOS & Android)

As any pedestrian who's had to trash a blown-out umbrella after turning a corner knows, one wind forecast does not fit all. SailFlow allows you to see realtime wind speed and direction from over 50,000 weather stations worldwide, so you can see what the wind's doing at each point along your course. We at AY usually use the weather station at Robbins Reef, since anything north of that is in the lee of the Jersey shoreline.

Weather Underground (Free for iOS and Android)

This is our "everything" weather app. Its nicely laid out main page has hourly/daily/weekly temperature and preciptitation forecasts, humidity, atmospheric pressure, UV index, sunrise and sunset times, and moon phases, all just a finger flick away. It's your one stop shop for weather preparedness, or just to sound like a know-it-all in front of your crew.

Navionics USA ($9.99 iOS/Android)

While technically not a weather app, a navigation app should absolutely be part of your sailing tech toolbox, even if it's only a backup for the backup. And since you'll have it anyway, you can use its comprehensive tide and current information to plan your trip. Tides and currents change at different times at The Battery than at the GW Bridge, and Navionics allows you to see high and low tide, and flood and ebb currents at thousands of locations up to a week in the future. That way you know if you'll be home in time for dinner after your sunset sail to the Statue of Liberty, or whether you should bring snacks. (Pro tip: Always bring snacks.)

A la carte Sailing Club in NYC?

New NYC Sailing Club

No annual memberships. Pay when you want to sail.

Our Practice Sails have become a great substitute to the annual membership style clubs found elsewhere in NYC. We will hold Practice Sails on Wednesdays and Sundays for the 2017 sailing season. Get on the water with a group of no more than 4 other sailors for 2.5 hours. Best part... one of Atlantic Yachting's incredible instructors will be on the boat with you the whole time. No more tiller hogs, no more docking stress, no more uneasiness. You know our crew, they're about as laid back as it comes. So they're happy to answer questions and expand your skills, or sit back and let you run the show.

$125 per sail or $500 for a block of 5.

While We Patiently Wait For NYC's Summer...

Let's get distracted with The St Bart's Bucket

The St Bart's Bucket is an incredible event to witness. Making 200-300ft yachts look pretty is easy. Well maybe. But the engineering behind a 280ft mast that can support itself, a mainsail, and a spinnaker the size of a Holiday Inn is what makes the Atlantic Yachting instructors drool. We can't seem to get Jenga past about 15 layers. #CabinFever

Don't forget to take advantage of great NYC Sailing Lesson Pre-Season DEALS. See you soon.

Be An Olympian In NYC

Atlantic Yachting is proud to be the only sailing outfit in NYC recommended by Time Out New York in their recent print issue on how to be an olympian right here in the city. Realistically... between zika, floating couches in the sailing venue, swimmers being robbed at gunpoint, and all the doping scandals... you made the right choice by not competing this year. Good call. Keep it real in NYC and join us on the water for a Practice Sail (for the experienced) or Sailing Lesson (Group or Private). Best Winter Sailing Destinations!

Best Winter Sailing Destinations

Sail Somewhere Warm This Winter. Our Top Picks

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are one of the finest sailing destinations in the world. Nowhere else can you enjoy warm winter temperatures, guaranteed wind (yes... guaranteed), deepwater easy navigation, and beach bars every...all in one place!

The Abacos, Bahamas set the bar for water clarity around the world. Gorgeous shallow flats blanketed in "Gin Clear Water" and bordered by powder white sand beaches are the norm in the Out Islands of the Bahamas. This is paradise for the sailor who wants an off-the-beaten-track vacation but the ability to find the occasional restaurant and bar as well.

This winter we'll be hosting advanced ASA Sailing Courses and Family Sailing Vacations in the BVI and Abaco. Earn your ASA 104 and next time you head to the islands, you can be the captain.

J24 Class 40th Anniversary

j24 40th anniversary learn to sail NYC

This May marks 40 years of the J24

Atlantic Yachting is so proud to sail J24s in NY Harbor. Even after 10 years here in NY Harbor we have never found a boat as perfectly versatile for all levels of instruction while carrying the weight and waterline to handle NYC's Hudson River conditions. They are still being made today, after 40 years in production.

A little J24 history thanks to the folks at the J24 Class Association:
"Rod Johnstone’s garage-born, dream boat built by hand over a 17-month period, and launched on May 15, 1976. There were lots of stories shared, as most who were gathered had helped either build, launch or sail RAGTIME during the memorable summer of ‘76. After launching, RAGTIME and her family crew (mostly under the age of 16) would go on to win 15 of 17 races in Eastern Connecticut that summer and inspire enough people to want a sistership that Rod quit his job, asked Everett Pearson to build them, his brother Bob to sell them, and the J/24 (and J/Boats) was born."

A huge thanks to the people over at J Boats for continuing to build and progress sailing after 40 years.

May 19, 2015 Talia C. said: "Our Charter last night was an absolute DREAM!"

Our Charter last night was an absolute DREAM! In addition to being expert sailors, Jonathan and Kyle were consummate hosts - they pleasantly refilled drinks, played great tunes, and made sure everyone was having a nice time. It was a very relaxed 2 hours, and they occasionally "interrupted" conversation (in quotes because it was welcome) to point out particularly beautiful views, special features, and fun architectural highlights. We can't wait to get out on the water again!

May 18, 2015 Lisa E. said:"It felt so special."

We chartered a sailboat from Atlantic Yachting to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday and we had a fantastic time. Logan (the captain) was the best. Really interesting and fun to spend a couple hours with. We sailed down the Hudson and back - a 2 hour trip. It was a little cold so we were given blankets to cozy up in. We brought lunch and everything was served to us. It felt so special. We would definitely take a trip with Atlantic Yachting and have already told lots of friends!! Thanks AY for making the day so special for us!!

May 17, 2015 Alli S said: "The best birthday present of all time!"

The best birthday present of all time! The crew was very friendly and welcoming. They gave us the choice between sailing and using the motor. Sailing without the motor was extremely peaceful. I will definitely use Atlantic Yachting for any future sailing trips and lessons!

May 11, 2015 Sebastian H. said: "...excellent service for our 3-hour Mother's Day sail"

There is no other sailing service in NYC that is as pleasant to sail with as Atlantic Yachting. Their website is incredibly easy to use for booking a private charter (or sailing lessons), which was the first indication to me that these guys are professional and know what they're doing. My suspicions were confirmed when we arrived at the Boat Basin and were led to the boat by Mariette, who continued to provide excellent service for our 3-hour Mother's Day sail. It's BYOB and BYOF(ood), but they handle putting out drinks and food with utensils, etc. Very attentive service and very relaxed atmosphere.

The boat itself is beautiful, and our captain Jonathan was an absolute pleasure to sail with. He let us steer the boat and had a fun talk with us, but he also let us alone to do our own thing. It was just so relaxing. They also have an excellent sound system on the boat and we played our own music the whole time.

It is not worth looking anywhere else if you want a peaceful and professional experience. These guys know what they're doing and will take great care of you. My family and I cannot wait to find an excuse to go sailing again with them.

Best Video of the Summer.

How to dock like a boss.

We all know that docking isn't easy. And sometimes its stressful. Thanks to AV-OG-TIL (a Norwegian NGO, working to reduce the harmful effects of alcohol) for a great video.

It's also a poignant point about alcohol they make as we lead up to the 4th of July. Keep it real on the water everyone and we'll see you out there.
