Our Top App Choices

The crew at Atlantic Yachting is on the water every day. They lean hard on experience as well as technology to keep all sailing activities not only safe, but also as enjoyable as possible. Whether or not you sail regularly, these two apps are our crew's top choices and are well worth the download!

MyRadar:

This app is great for watching incoming weather. Hourly forecast are a good source of general information, but nothing beats being able to pull up the radar in your exact location and decide for yourself if that dark cloud is coming your way. Fully zoomable and updated every five or ten minutes. Best part...it's FREE! Sailing on the Hudson river can be tricky during the summer. The city's heat and near coastal location can really alter frontal movement and patterns. Nothing beats updated radar in your pocket.

Navionics:

This app has changed navigation. The ability to see full chart data right from your phone has created the opportunity for some sailors to not even purchase large GPS plotters anymore. Once moving, your course over ground and speed are clearly displayed on the screen. Plan your day on the water from your couch, and let the app calculate distance, time, fuel consumption, etc. There is also regularly updated harbor information, weather, tides, and currents. The app isn't free but well, well worth the $14.99 for iPhone. Many models of iPhone and iPad also have stand alone GPS receivers, meaning your chartplotter will work even outside of cell phone range. Atlantic Yachting captain Jonathan Horvath says: "Sailing in NYC is pretty simple regarding water depths, but there are a lot of channels and navigational aids. This app is great for peace of mind and reassurance that you're in the right place, right on your phone.

"Excellent" | 5 out of 5

DCP1988 on Tripadvisor says:

The sailing course was first rate, our instructor was knowledgeable, patient and fun. The location was great. The boat was in good condition. Even the exam at the end wasn't as bad as we feared.

Kids Sailing Camp Provides Adventure!

Summer Sailing Programs with Atlantic Yachting provide something hard found in the city... a safe, fun, and exciting way for Manhattan youth to try something NEW this summer. With sessions in full swing, the kids can be seen sailing all over the NY harbor, learning and perfecting their sailing skills, all while searching for the location of the day's cache. This year online clues engage kids and push them to think outside the box. Then using their knowledge of navigation and their sailing skills, sail towards the answer, eventually unlocking the cache location. So next time you're taking a walk along the hudson, or dreaming out your office window, look out on the water for the blue and white sailboats full of smiles.

With many August sessions full, space still remains in July. Discounts up to $300 and scholarships are still available for July sessions (1 week and 2 week). Ages 9-15 from from first timers to advanced!

What will your kids do this summer?

Watch the carnage....up close!

The 2013 America's Cup is going to be...well...gnarly. They are sailing massive 70' catamarans that would pass a ski boat like they're standing still. Oh yeah....and they flip over! ASA, the sailing association our Sailing School is affiliated with, has something pretty cool to offer. We're sailors so naturally cruises aren't our thing, but this could be awesome! If you can't make it there in person...be sure to tune in. Sports film experts from the NFL, Nascar, and more will make this years America's Cup very exciting to watch.

Tall Ships Invade NYC

Tall Ships NYC

Seventeen tall ships and 10 warships will sail New York Harbor and its local waterways for Fleet Week 2012 (May 23rd - May 30th).

The tall ships include the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE; KRI DEWARUCI of Indonesia; JUAN SEBASTIAN DE ELCANO of Spain, GLORIA of Colombia, GUAYAS of Ecuador, CISNE BRANCO of Brazil, CUAUHTEMOC of Mexico, and ETOILE and BELLE POULE, both of France.

The excitement will begin on the morning of May 23 when a flotilla of tall ships and warships sails under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and up the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge, where they will turn and proceed to their respective berths.

See the tall ships up close on a private sailboat charter with Atlantic Yachting.
